Feeling like life is just a bit too much?

I spoke to a client recently who said they were tired, and unmotivated, and everything just seemed so hard and overwhelming… They were questioning whether they were tired because everything was hard and overwhelming or were they overwhelmed because they were tired? Or does it even matter?

These are all great questions, and ones I hear regularly with the amazing women I work with. With everything we are bombarded with in modern life, the stress of just living can really take it’s toll.

A big part of the challenge is that the lack of sleep, feeling emotionally worn out and lacking motivation can make it really challenging to get out of this state.

A few things that I walk through with my clients include:

  • Working to identify the triggers This might be work pressures, social pressures, family pressures, financial stress, study, family strain, illness or death, or even chronic illness of another form.

  • Identify what we can do to reduce or eliminate the issue Consider outsourcing tasks (eg getting a cleaner, extra childcare or a meal delivery service), or changing circumstances (setting boundaries or more).

  • Support healthy digestive system - its the key to getting the right nutrients to support your stress and energy responses

  • Encourage healthy habits - regular exercise or movement, socialisation, setting boundaries etc.

Sometimes the problem is bigger and needs a different type of support, like that from a counsellor or psychologist.

To me, the answer to the questions above isn’t about which came first, it’s about what is the underlying cause of all of it. Because it becomes a vicious cycle and doesn’t really matter whether it’s the overwhelm that is driving the tiredness and fatigue or the other way round, both need to be addressed.
