Thrush triggers - the hidden impact of menstrual products
If you get thrush or thrush-like symptoms (think itching, irritation, redness on the vulva or inside the vagina) then I'm sure you have looked all over the place for treatments. The timing of these symptoms can tell us a lot about whats going on. If these symptoms occur during or after a period, then its time to look at what menstrual products are being used and how these might influence symptoms.
** How Menstrual Products Can Trigger Thrush Symptoms ** Thrush, a common yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, can be made worse by menstrual products. Here’s how:
Menstrual Blood and pH Levels Menstrual blood has a higher pH (or is more alkaline) than the vagina’s natural acidic environment. This shift can allow yeast, like Candida<> to thrive. If pads/period undies aren't being changed often enough, the blood sitting there can affect the skin.
Irritation from Period Products Pads, period undies, menstrual cups and tampons can cause irritation due to their materials or fragrances, or if they aren't being washed properly (if they're reusable). This irritation can damage the delicate skin of the vulva and vagina, making it more susceptible to infections like thrush. Additionally, wearing these products for extended periods can create a warm, damp environment that is ideal for yeast growth.
The Role of Reusable Products I love our environment, and I use re-usable products most of the time. The challenge occurs when they are contributing to symptoms. This can happen because: • Moisture Retention: If reusable products are not changed frequently enough, they can retain moisture and warmth, creating an environment conducive to yeast overgrowth. • Improper Cleaning: If reusable products are not cleaned thoroughly and steralised after each use, residual blood and bacteria can lead to infections. • Not allowed to dry: Reusable products need to be dried and stored correctly between uses. If not, they will harbour bacteria which will transfer to the skin of the vulva/vagina when they are used next time.
** Changes to Consider ** If traditional menstrual products are causing discomfort or increasing the risk of thrush, consider these alternatives: • Menstrual Cups: These collect menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it, helping maintain a more balanced vaginal environment. Make sure you have at least 2 cups so they can be washed and steralised between uses. • Organic Unbleached Fragrance-Free Cotton Pads/Tampons: Made from organic cotton, and without the chemicals needed to bleach the cotton, these pads minimize exposure to chemicals and fragrances that may irritate sensitive skin.
Understanding how menstrual products impact vaginal health is crucial for preventing thrush-like symptoms. By being mindful of product choices and practicing proper hygiene, women can enjoy their periods with greater comfort and less risk of infections.
