Saying YES to me

Are you saying Yes to everyone else but NO to yourself?

Being an amazing mum/parnter/colleague/whatever it is you do is often top most in our wishlist for ourselves and our family. We want to be the fun mum, the present partner, the go-to colleague. Often this feels like saying yes to things that we feel uncomfortable about or that is detremental to our own goals, hopes and dreams.

Then as time goes on we feel resentful, disappointed, angry even. Then guilty. The emotional (and sometimes physical) toll takes over, leading to health changes:

  • mental health declines as it undermines your confidence in ourself and adds to the worry/mood/anxiety you might already be experiencing;
  • your periods start to go out of whack - whether they get heavier/lighter, irregular, increasing PMS symptoms or all of the above. Your hormones are responding to the increased stress;
  • your weight shifts as your eating habits change to "self soothe" through chocolate, coffee and wine.

So lets get you back on track. Whenever a decision is put in front of you, ask yourself: Is this a YES for ME? If it is, then great, there's your answer. If not then it's a no (or maybe a not right now if that feels more comfortable). No explanation needed, you can all go about your day. Feels good doesn't it! It's a small but mighty step to getting yourself, your body, mind and health, back.

Looking after yourself first is the only way to be able to look after those around you. Without these types of simple steps you are doing yourself, and your loved ones, a disservice. In the hierarchy of life we often prioritise:

  1. Family
  2. Friends
  3. Work
  4. Self

When we need to prioritise:

  1. Self
  2. whatever you want to come next!
